After the tournament, the next set of Rotations Level 1 classes will switch which rotation the athletes will learn, so it is normal to take the class 2-3 times before moving on.

The main focus is reviewing all 6 rotations of a 6-2 system and applying more advanced skills, including swing blocking, defense, spot serving, and strategic decision making. Athletes will be assigned a position, such as setter, middle, outside, or libero, and will be expected to discuss other positions and their roles, not just their own. If you are unsure about which program to sign-up, have your athlete take our placement quiz for each level. The are designed to test the content that we go over in each level. For some, they can be challenging

At REC It Volleyball, we do not hold tryouts because we want registration to feel welcoming and low-pressure. Since families choose their own level, these quizzes help athletes test what they truly know without relying on guessing or process of elimination.

A lower score does not mean an athlete is bad at volleyball. It simply means they may not be quite ready for the next level yet.

Expert Coach

Meet the owners

Coach Amber Rauh
Coach Amber Rauh
  • Coach Amber Rauh started Rec It Volleyball because she experienced firsthand how easy it is for a capable athlete to slip through the gaps of the volleyball system. At fourteen years old, Amber made her high school varsity volleyball team as a freshman. Before that, she had taken recreational classes, practiced in gym class, and believed she was being prepared for the next level. After her freshman season, she attended a club tryout expecting that her skill and effort would be enough. Instead, she walked in blindly. Neither the recreational programs she had attended nor her high school experience had taught her what club coaches would ask, what they would be evaluating, or how to speak confidently about the game. When she was asked what rotational system she had played in, she froze. Her team did use rotations, but she did not know the name for what she had been doing. In that moment, despite being a varsity athlete with real ability, she felt unprepared and embarrassed. She played poorly, did not make the team, and left feeling like she had been judged on knowledge she was never given the chance to learn.

That experience revealed a flaw in the volleyball world that Amber would continue to see again and again. Too many recreational athletes work hard, improve physically, and develop real potential, yet they are never given the strategic language, game understanding, or context needed to move forward with confidence. Instead of being taught the "why" behind what they are doing, many players are expected to figure it out on their own until they reach club, where higher-level coaching, clearer feedback, and more advanced instruction suddenly become available. By then, athletes are often being evaluated as though that knowledge should already be obvious. For Amber, the issue was never a lack of ability. The issue was a lack of access to the right information at the right time.

That is why Amber built Rec It Volleyball. With a background in education and a passion for helping people grow, she wanted to create the kind of program that gives recreational athletes the information they need before they are judged for not knowing it. Rec It is designed to teach skills, strategy, movement, and terminology in a clear and intentional way, so athletes understand not just how to do something, but how to talk about it and apply it in competitive settings. When a topic is important, Rec It coaches tell athletes directly that a coach may ask about that exact concept at tryouts, so they know to pay attention and remember it. That approach helps players walk into tryouts ready for intelligent conversations about movement, strategy, and rotations instead of feeling lost or blindsided. At its core, Rec It Volleyball exists to make sure young athletes do not miss opportunities simply because no one took the time to prepare them properly.

Cliff Barany
Cliff Barany
  • Coach Cliff Barany came to volleyball as an adult beginner, which meant he entered the sport already behind many of the people around him. Still, after attending an adult open gym for the first time, Cliff had a genuinely positive experience and left excited to return. He did not perform especially well, but he felt inspired and wanted the opportunity to learn. When he registered for the following week, however, the organizer emailed him and said he was not allowed to come back because he was not good enough, offering no recommendation for where he could go instead. That rejection stayed with him, not only because it was discouraging, but because it revealed how easily a beginner can be pushed out of the sport before ever being given a real chance. Rather than walking away, Coach Cliff became even more determined to prove that being new should never mean being unwelcome.

What Cliff experienced reflected a much larger problem in volleyball. For many athletes and families, especially those with a 13- or 14-year-old entering high school who has never had formal volleyball training, there are very few meaningful options. The spaces with the best coaching often feel closed off, while many recreational programs offer limited instruction or are designed only for younger beginners. Families are often left with two difficult choices: pay the high cost of quality training or settle for programs that do not truly help athletes grow. As a result, social and financial barriers begin working together, keeping capable players from developing simply because they do not yet have the skill, money, or access to fit into the spaces that already exist.

That is the problem Coach Cliff set out to address when Rec It was created. Before opening the company, he had already started a recreational adult open gym league, which helped reduce some of the social barriers but did not do enough to support real skill development. Rec It was built to remove that barrier to entry and give athletes the chance not only to enjoy the sport, but to discover what they are truly capable of becoming. The goal was to create a flexible pathway where it is okay to start late, where athletes can receive high-level training without an overwhelming commitment, and where growth matters more than already being the best. Just as importantly, Cliff wanted young athletes to become good people as well as good players, developing the patience, empathy, and communication skills that can help make the next generation of volleyball more welcoming than the one that first turned him away.
