Description: What is covered in Tryout Prep?
- Tryout-specific content:Athletes will learn what coaches typically look for during tryouts, practice tryout-style drill simulations, track statistics for different skills, and learn ways to stand out in a positive and coachable way.
- Advanced compound drills:Tryout Prep focuses on combining multiple skills in one drill. Many drills require two or more athletes to work together, which helps athletes practice more realistic game-like situations.
- Defense: Transitioning, swing blocking, covering, and jousting.
- Offense: Tipping, front-row and back-row setting, and back setting.
- Serving: Spot serving and jump float serving.
- Rotations: Athletes will apply the skills covered in camp to rotational situations and game-like movement.
What is the difference between All-Skills and Tryout Prep?
All-Skills Camp:
All-Skills Camp is more beginner-friendly and supportive. Many drills are coach-led or coach-partnered. For example, a coach may toss or set during a hitting drill instead of another athlete. This allows athletes to get successful reps without another player’s inexperience limiting their learning, reps, or enjoyment.
Tryout Prep:
Tryout Prep is more advanced and game-like. Athletes are expected to combine multiple skills and work with other athletes during drills. For example, in a drill on the last day one athlete may swing block, transition to hit, and rely on a setter running in from the back row. If the setter cannot set a hittable ball, the hitter may not get the hitting rep they need. This format helps athletes understand how their skills affect teammates, which is an important part of tryouts and real gameplay.
Does my athlete need to be trying out for a team to join Tryout Prep?
No. Athletes do not need to be trying out for a team, but this camp is a great fit for athletes preparing for 8th grade, freshman, JV, or club tryouts. Athletes who are not trying out but can train at this level are also welcome.
Athletes should have a solid foundation before joining. If they cannot handle 2-3 major focal points while still consistently pass to a target or set a ball high enough for another player to hit, we recommend starting with All-Skills Camp instead.
ATTIRE:
- Kneepads are required:Dick’s Sporting Goods usually has many sizing options. Common volleyball kneepad brands include Nike, Mizuno, ASICS, Under Armour, Adidas, and others.
- Hair: Any hair that is chin-length or longer should be pulled back and kept out of the athlete’s face.
- Sneakers:Athletic sneakers are strongly recommended. Volleyball shoes, running shoes, or athletic-friendly basketball sneakers are all good options. Please avoid lifestyle shoes such as Converse or Air Force 1s when possible, as many athletes slip in these shoes or experience foot pain while training.
- Clothing: A good rule of thumb is that athletes should wear clothing they can comfortably move, dive, roll, and sit on the ground in.
- Allowed tops:T-shirts, long sleeves, sweatshirts, arm sleeves, and modest sleeveless athletic tops are acceptable. Sleeveless tops must stay secure and provide appropriate coverage while athletes dive, roll, and move on the ground.
- Allowed bottoms: Spandex, athletic shorts, leggings, sweatpants, and pickleball skorts are acceptable.
- Allowed accessories: Sports watches, headbands, and religious jewelry are allowed as long as they do not create a safety issue.
- Jewelry: No hanging earrings or beaded bracelets. If a beaded bracelet breaks, the beads can scatter across the court and create a safety hazard. Religious jewelry may be worn, but it should be covered or secured when possible to help prevent it from breaking or causing injury. Everything else is okay.
- NOT ALLOWED Crop tops, jean shorts or pants, skirts, Crocs, tank tops with thin or stretchy straps, hanging earrings, and beaded bracelets.
