🏐 Beginner Volleyball: Your First Day Guide

Trying volleyball for the first time can feel exciting and a little scary. You might wonder if everyone else will be better than you, what the coaches are like, or what happens if you mess up. That’s exactly what Beginner class is for. You are not expected to already know how to play.

🏐 For Athletes: What to Expect

You’ll be in class with other athletes who are still learning too. Some may have played in gym class or at camp. Others may be touching a volleyball for the first time.

You do not have to keep up with anyone else. You’ll learn things like passing, setting, serving, hitting, moving around the court, communication, and basic gameplay.

What are the drills like?

A lot of our Beginner drills are done individually with a coach.

That means if your pass goes sideways, your set goes behind you, or your serve hits the net, you are not messing up someone else’s practice. You get your own turns, your own feedback, and lots of chances to try again. As you get more comfortable, we start adding partners, movement, communication, and more game-like drills.

What are the coaches like?

There are typically 2–3 coaches at every practice, and we try to make sure there is a mix of coaching styles at each session.

Some athletes are highly motivated and want to improve quickly for a school or club team. They may connect best with a coach who is more technical, detailed, and strict about mechanics.

Other athletes are nervous, brand new, or still figuring out whether they even like volleyball. They may do better with a coach who is calmer, more encouraging, and focused on helping them feel comfortable and confident.

Most athletes need a mix of both. Our goal is to make sure that, no matter what kind of athlete you are, there is someone at practice whose coaching style fits what you need. You can learn from different coaches and connect with the ones who help you feel comfortable, challenged, and ready to improve.

What if I mess up?

You will sometimes. Everyone does.

You might miss the ball completely. Your serve might not go over the net. You might forget what you are supposed to do. That is okay. We care more about what you do next.

Can you listen to the correction? Can you try again? Can you keep going when something is hard? That is how you improve.

What if I don’t understand?

Ask us!

You can say:

“Can you show me again?” “Where am I supposed to stand?” “What should my arms look like?”

You are not supposed to already know everything.

Can I make friends?

Yes! We hope you do.

A lot of athletes make friends in class, sign up for future sessions together, and move up through our levels together. We encourage friendships because volleyball is more fun when you have people you enjoy practicing with.

What do we want from you?

We do not expect you to be good at volleyball yet.

We want you to listen to your coaches, try the drills, ask questions, be kind to the other athletes, accept corrections, and keep trying when something is difficult.

Your job is not to be perfect. Your job is to learn.

👨‍👩‍👧 For Parents: First-Day Logistics

Beginner classes are for girls ages 9–14 and boys ages 8–12.

Classes are co-ed, but there are usually more girls than boys. Most Beginner classes typically have about 1–3 boys.

If you have a son who is interested in joining, we encourage him to sign up with a friend or two if possible. It can make the first day feel more comfortable. Boys are also completely welcome to register on their own.

What should my athlete wear?

Athletes should arrive in comfortable athletic clothing with athletic sneakers, volleyball knee pads, a water bottle, and long hair tied back.

Volleyball knee pads are required.

They can be purchased online through Amazon or in-store at DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Does my child need experience?

No. Beginner classes do not require previous volleyball experience.

Your athlete does not need to already know how to serve, pass, set, rotate, or understand the rules. That is what we are here to teach.

What if my child is nervous?

Remind them that this is not a tryout.

They are not being tested to see if they are good enough to participate. They are coming to a class designed specifically for athletes who are still learning.

The goal of the first day is simple:

Come in, meet the coaches, and give volleyball a chance. 🏐
